We’re moving…

Pretty Penniless is on the move! I’m finding Tumblr a little hard to use and lots of my fashionable friends are over on Blogger, so it just seemed like the right thing to do. You can find me here - http://littlebirdfashion.blogspot.com and I’d love to see you over there.

Ciao Bella!

5th November 2009 - Remember, remember…

Dress: Zara, £25

Jumper: Primark, £7

Tights: Accessorize, £10

Pixie boots: ASOS, £26

Belt: Primark, £2

Ring: Thrifted, £2

Total: £72

Happy Bonfire Night! I truly love Bonfire Night - there’s something magical about eating a cheap hotdog while twirling a sparkler and keeping warm next to a huge pile of burning rubbish. We’re going to a big do on Saturday night so for now, I cooked chilli for tea and we’re watching out of the window.

Today’s look was a little bit inspired by Jess from What I Wore (http://whatiwore.tumblr.com - incidentally, Tumblr doesn’t seem to like HTML text links… why?!) She rocked a fab burgundy outfit that I really loved - it’s a colour I never wear but I think it works really well with blonde hair and pale skin. That’s me, then!

I’m getting so much wear from my summer dresses, just by popping a cosy roll neck jumper underneath. Primark are so amazing for these - they have them in every colour you could imagine and some are as cheap as £3. I could wear this dress 3 days in a row and make it look different every time by switching the jumper, tights, belt and shoes.

Hope you all have a fantastic Guy Fawkes’ Night! :)

3rd November 2009 - Hear me roar!

Dress: Reko, £40

Cardigan: Primark, £10

Tights: M&S, £4

Boots: Primark, £17

Necklace: mynamenecklace.com, £20

Belt: Primark, £1

Ring (not seen): Thrifted, £3

Total: £95

Sometimes I long to wear my pretty going out dresses for the everyday grind. I have a whole section of my wardrobe dedication to ‘fancy’ dresses, but they just hang there looking dejected and unloved. Sigh.

Well, continuing on from yesterday’s ‘why not dress a little inappropriately?!’ theme, today I decided to rock one of my favourite party dresses. I needed the extra attitude for a trip to the dentist (had my first filling - ouch) so this fierce leopard print was perfect.

Wearing a simple black vest underneath and teaming the dress with a casual cardi, boots and tights really ‘normalised’ this look, I think. The shiny fabric gives a lux feel I really wanted to play down, and by jove - I think I’ve done it! Do you agree?

2nd November 2009 - Rock, roll and Monday mornings

T-shirt: H&M, £10

Shorts: Topshop, £28

Cardigan: H&M, £10

Tights: Primark, £2

Pixie boots: ASOS, £26

Necklace: Thrifted, £1.40

Total: £77.40

First of all, let me apologise for the messy bedroom. I’ll tidy it later, promise! :)

On to more important things. Monday mornings usually mean grey skies, traffic jams and gloomy faces, but today I took matters into my own hands and cheered myself up with a highly inappropriate outfit. I’m a real rock girl at heart - I love grungy tees and ripped jeans, but usually only wear them for gigs. But why not for the office? Well, probably because the shorts and too short and the tights are too sheer, hence the reason I actually wore my denim pencil skirt instead of the shorts. Never mind!

Sunday afternoon baking

I very, very rarely bake. I’m a pretty good cook and can knock together an evening meal without much fuss. But baking? Hhmmm.

Well, when I woke up to torrential rain, no water due to a burst pipe and a horribly debilitating head cold, I felt a strong desire to bake super sweet cupcakes. So that’s what I did!

Check out my cute vintage kitchen stuff…

After much faffing and a wobbly moment when I realised I needed the bowl again but had no water to wash it with (solution - an antibacterial wipe and vigorous drying), they came out like this…

Result! Then for the fun part, and what better colour for cupcakes than pink?

I had no piping bag, so settled for spreading with a spoon. And yes, I did lick the beaters! :)

29th October 2009 - Back to black

Floral vest: New Look, £7

Jeans: Miss Selfridge, £20

Cardigan: Primark, £10

Leather jacket: Steve Madden, £50

Pumps: Topshop £25

Owl necklace: Thrifted, £2

Owl ring: Thrifted, £2

Nameplate necklace: mynamenecklace.com, £25

Total: £141

I’m feeling a little under the weather, so thought a mostly-black ensemble was quite fitting today. I’m finding this vest really versatile - a great buy for the season. Yawn! PJs, Lemsip and bed for me, I think. Goodnight!

28th October 2009 - Colour me purple

Dress: Primark, £12

Tights: M&S, £4

Boots: Primark, £17

Belt: Thrifted, £5

Necklace: Accessorize, £8

Arm warmers: Primark, £2

Headband: Handmade

Total: £48

I wore this to go to the cinema last night - a night spent sitting on an uncomfortable chair in an often too-hot/too-cold room definitely calls for the most comfortable clothes and plenty of layers. I also wore a purple and gold cotton scarf and my cream mac.

I’m so pleased with the headband, as it made use of an old floral corsage I found a little too big to wear pinned to my clothes. So I pinned it to this plain black band to make a fab hair accessory - reuse, replace, recycle! :)

Seasonal style

From L-R:

Brown suede studded boots, mustard yellow knitted tank, knitted grey jumper dress, chestnut Ugg boots, purple and gold floral cotton scarf, fluffy earmuffs, knitted hat, argyle print hand warmers, black suede studded ankle boots, green knitted cardigan.

I’m so glad the weather’s getting wintery again. Winter is the season that defines my style - I love chunky knits, snuggly boots and cute hats.

I think everyone’s style is centred around a certain season. Nicole Richie is a real summer girl - she’s all about floaty dresses, sun kissed hair and flip flops.

Day

And night

Now Sarah Jessica Parker is a girl after my own heart. She wears structured shapes, heavy fabrics and cute cover ups.

Day

And night

If I were to pick out three key pieces from my wardrobe (whatever the weather), I’d choose a cardigan, a belt and a statement necklace. These three pieces can be mixed with dresses and jeans, bare legs and tights, boots and pumps from spring right through to winter… but I’ll always look better when it’s cold outside!

What’s your style season?

26th October 2009 - Monday blues

Pussybow blouse: Primark, £10

Jumper: Thrifted, £2

Jeans: Thrifted, £7

Boots: Primark, £17

Bangle: Primark, £2

Total: £38 - cheapest outfit so far!

Remember my winter wishlist and that cute pussybow blouse? Well, I wanted it in fuchsia but couldn’t resist this royal blue beauty, especially at £10! I originally tried this outfit with a mustard yellow knitted tank for a 60s vibe, but the fabrics just didn’t sit nicely together and the whole thing looked a little cheap. So I popped on this cute nautical knit from my car boot haul the other weekend, and voila! A laidback look perfect for a gloomy Monday.

How are you all dealing with the clocks going back? I love the darker nights - they remind me that Halloween, Bonfire night and Christmas (my three all time favourite celebrations) are just around the corner! :)

25th October 2009 - Simple Sunday

Dress: Primark, £12

Tights: Primark, £1

Boots: ASOS, £26

Belt: Primark, £2

Necklace: Online, £20

Total: £61

I bought this dress yesterday and am so pleased with it. It’s so simple, which is its charm. The little details - the bell sleeves and fabic buttons - are just enough to make this dress shine. I teamed it with a belt, a necklace and some colour pop tights and was good to go. Perfect for Sunday lounging!
